They manage to get something resembling snow into balls, don't they? So... why not fireworks? It's a difficult technology, though.

As long as you have it under control, it's more damage inside the ball, and inside only; nothing to fear from the outside. Now that you mention it, this reminds me of one Isaac Assimov's essays in which he elaborates a theory of a universe that expands and shrinks alternately... one way to escape destruction would be to build a ship that would keep humankind out of the influence area of the implosion/explosion. Of course, this ship had to be build millions of years before the final collapse, and should also last for millions of years after the new explosion.
